When I first started wearing makeup, I was a complete mess. Layering makeup products was a nightmare, I had no idea what goes on after what. I used to watch a few tutorials on YouTube, overestimated my makeup skill every time and would literally go outside looking like a joke. To be fair, I’m not a pro yet either but I know a thing or two about makeup now, and that’s what I’m gonna share with you all today.
There are tons of brand-new makeup products launching almost every week. Whether you are a makeup beginner or not, it can be quite intimidating to build your own makeup collection from scratch. I believe that, makeup doesn’t always have to be fancy and expensive, it's more about applying the right products (for your complexion) in the correct way and order. While we all admire those Instagram makeups, if you are just starting out, it’s important to learn the basics first rather than just jumping into them immediately. You don’t need a lot of products to build yourself a good collection, there are only a few essentials that should be in your makeup kit to help you achieve a flawless makeup look. Here I’m listing the 14 must-have makeup products and the exact order to apply them, I wish I knew back then!
Primer preps your skin for makeup. A lot of people tend to skip this step, but it is in fact one of the most crucial steps of makeup. Primer creates an even base for your makeup by filling in the fine lines, large pores and smoothing out uneven textures on your face. Applying primer at the first stage of makeup helps your further products to glide on evenly and stay put longer without looking cakey.
Foundation is used for evening out skin complexion. Foundation comes in different forms (Liquid, powder or cream), coverage level (Light, medium or full) and finishes (Dewy or matte). You can use either a foundation brush, or a beauty blender or simply your fingers to apply foundation on your face.
Concealer gives you an extra layer of coverage. Apply concealer to cover any blemishes, scars, pimples, skin discoloration and dark circles under your eyes. You can also use a concealer few shades lighter than your skin tone to highlight certain areas of your face.
Contouring is a technique for creating shadows and adding dimension to your face. You can use either a stick, cream or powder product to contour your face. Whichever contour product you use, if its blended perfectly, you can achieve a flawlessly sculpted face.
Setting powder is used to set freshly applied makeup so that it lasts longer and doesn’t crease. Instead of applying all over your face, try to focus on the areas of your face where you tend to be more oily and where the makeup tends to crease, like the T-zone and the under eye areas.
After wearing foundation, our complexion may look a little bit flat. That’s where blush comes in handy, to add back the flushed, healthy glow on our cheeks. Applying blush can make a simple makeup look more vibrant.
Bronzer will give you a sun-kissed glow any time of the day. And, no, bronzing and contouring aren’t the same thing. Contour is used for further defining your facial features, while a bronzer adds warmth into your face, typically applied in the areas where sun would naturally hit.
You can give yourself a dewy, glam glow with a highlighter. A little bit of highlighter can completely change your look if applied in the right way. It should go on the high points of your face such as the tip of your nose, brow bones, top of your cheekbones, your cupid’s bow etc.
There are different types of eyebrow products you can get on the market- gel, pencil, powder or pomade. Brow gel will help you tame your eyebrow hair, keep them in place and make them look more groomed. You can use a brow pencil or brow powder if you want to fill in your brows and make them look more natural. Get a brow pomade if you prefer more bold and defined brows. Though I’d suggest you stick to a pencil or powder eyebrow product if you are a beginner, as they are easier to use.
You do not need so many expensive palettes to create beautiful eye makeup looks. If you are just building your makeup collection, it’s always a good idea to invest in a neutral eyeshadow palette. A natural makeup look never goes out of style!
Eyeliner is all about enhancing the shape of your eyes. If you look tired and want to make your eyes pop, eyeliner is the key. While a pencil eyeliner is much less fussy to use, a liquid eyeliner will help you achieve more precision.
A few swipes of mascara can enhance your eyelashes and transform your entire eye makeup. Depending on your makeup look and preference, you can use a mascara to make your lashes look fuller, thicker, darker or longer. If you struggle to wear false lashes or just don’t like to wear them, I suggest you invest in a good mascara.
Even on days when you are not wearing any makeup, just one swipe of a bright lipstick can instantly light up your face and give you that “I made an effort to get ready” look! There are so many lip products out there- liquid lipsticks, matte lipsticks, lip gloss, lip stains, lip balms and lot more. No matter what type of lip product you use, a perfect nude and a bold color are must-haves for your makeup kit.
Last but not the least, a quality setting spray to lock all that hard work you’ve been doing. Setting spray helps you to keep your makeup in place and look flawless for hours. Here’s a list of the best setting sprays available on the market right now, pick the one that’s best suited for your needs.
Just a friendly reminder that, there are no rules to makeup. We all are beautiful with or without makeup. Don’t feel overwhelmed by seeing tons of fancy products beauty influencers are flaunting on social media. Build your collection slowly.
